This is another one where I’m just spreading the word – credit this time must go to a friend’s mum who rescued me from the near-tragedy of cracking a tomato tart in the final moments before serving.
Use this trick to remove any large pie, tart or sausage roll type dish from a baking tray with sides. It’s a bit like the way rescuers pick up a beached whale. Alright, only a bit.
- Tear 3-4 long strips of grease proof paper to distribute along the length of the tart. The strips must be long enough for you to comfortably hold each side. The gap between each strip should be small enough so that the tart doesn’t bow into the gap.
- Make sure the tart is completely unstuck from the tray by running a palette knife or fish slice along the length.
- Carefuly slide the paper strips between the tart and the tray and distribute evenly along the length. Don’t scrimp on strips – if you are going to this much effort you might as well do it properly.
- If the tart is particularly long, enlist the help of anyone in the vicinity.
- Lift both sides & ends of the tart at the same tine by holding onto the paper strips. Move to your chopping board or serving plate. Ta-dah!
